Shelter Expansion

The Need

In Snohomish County alone, more than 700 single mothers and children are waiting to get into emergency housing. Worse yet, the fastest growing segment of the homeless population is women with children. The waiting list is growing and the need for more shelter to serve mothers in crisis increases daily. Unfortunately, North Sound 2-1-1, a community wide assistance service, says that she will wait 3 to 6 months before shelter becomes available. In the midst of this challenge, Everett Gospel Mission has an opportunity to increase our capacity to provide nurturing, safe, and stable shelter to mothers and their children currently living in crisis. By increasing our capacity EGM can help diminish and remove the series of losses and changes that result in ongoing grief and despair for the women and children who suffer from homelessness.

Benefits of Increasing Capacity

  • ~  Increasing capacity in Snohomish County by 20%.
  • ~  Reduction in county wide wait times for emergency shelter for families.
  • ~  Impoverished families connected to a stable support system that includes professionals who will be available to them when they leave EGM.
  • ~  More homeless families (both parent and children) moved along the continuum of care from crisis to stability in critical areas of physical health, mental health, education, parenting skills, dietary health, and housing.

The Solution

Our goal with this expansion is to double the number of women and children EGM is able to shelter. The expansion will happen in two phases. Phase one consists of renovating and retiring the debt associated with a facility we have recently acquired. This facility will allow us to relocate our administrative offices from one of the Women and Children’s Shelter buildings to the new administrative facility.

Phase One Projected Cost: $315,000
Amount Raised to Date: $129,000

Phase two consists of renovating the current administrative offices and portions of the other Women and Children’s Shelter buildings to accommodate the increased capacity.

Phase Two Projected Cost: $60,000
Amount Raised to Date: $36,000

Total Amount Raised to Date: $165,000

Amount Needed: $210,000
