Mission And History
The Everett Gospel Mission was established in 1961 to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the homeless and hurting of the community by spreading the Gospel through Rescue Mission work. Today we are the largest Faith-Based Organization for homeless men, women and children in Snohomish, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties. In addition, we are the only organization to provide emergency shelter to single men and the larger of only two organizations providing emergency shelter to single women. The new Men's Shelter and Day Center was built in 1993 with funds from individual donors, community businesses, and Snohomish County. This facility was designed to meet the needs of a specific clientele group of homeless men. Housing and work are provided to meet those with special needs such as the mentally ill, the alcoholic awaiting or recently released from treatment, and those newly released from prison or jail seeking rehabilitation. This facility sleeps up to 150 nightly. The Women and Children's Shelter opened in 1984 in response to this growing need in the community. The population of women who have been abused, or have had substance abuse problems has risen dramatically over the last 20 years. According to the Snohomish County Department of Human Services, 41% of homeless people seeking shelter in the year 2000 were women and children. Because of this growing need, EGM acquired a beautiful four-townhouse complex in 1999 can sleep up to 75 women and children nightly. This site also houses the Administration Offices. There are future plans to move these offices to another nearby location to create space for 25 more residents, bringing the housing total to 100 nightly.
